Congress Considers Water-System Funding
SHARON, Pa. — Federal legislation designed to help improve local
water and sewer infrastructure could be in place this year, said
U.S. Rep. Phil English of Erie, R-3rd.
English visited Sharon's waste treatment plant Wednesday to talk
about his support for the Clean Water Trust Act of 2005. He is one
of 20 house members who have co-sponsored the bill.
The bill calls for $7.5 billion in federal funds a year to be
dedicated to clean water infrastructure programs through the Clean
Water Trust. English said the money would be distributed through
local governments through grants and loans and could be used for
public or private infrastructure projects.
Sharon is under state and federal mandate to improve its waste
treatment plant. Sharon City Councilwoman Jennifer Barborak said the
estimated costs for the work are $32 million to $34 million. |
